THANKSGIVING

"Giving THANKS always for all things unto God the Father in the name of our Lord      Jesus Christ."  (Ephesians 5:20)

A great deal has been written about the virtue of forgetting old grudges, prejudices, unpleasant experiences and heartaches. We also need to be reminded of some of the blessings of remembering. Remembering can be good spiritual exercise.

At Thanksgiving we need to:

Remember OUR SINS that we might confess them to God.

Remember OUR WEAKNESSES that we may receive strength.

Remember OUR HUMANITY that we might stop trying to be God.

Remember GOD'S MERCIES that we might be merciful to others.

Remember OUR JOYS that we might be joyful.

Remember GOD'S GREATNESS that we might be humble

Remember OUR POVERTY that we might share our prosperity.

Remember GOD'S FORGIVENESS that we might forgive others.

Remember OUR NEEDS that we might serve the needs of others.

Remember JESUS CHRIST that we might grow to be more like Him.

¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, (Ephesians 1:3)

If You LOVE Me

¶ "If you love Me, keep My commandments. - John 14:15

A pilot was experiencing difficulty in landing his plane because of fog; And the airport decided to bring him in by radar. As the pilot began to receive directions from the ground he suddenly remembered a tall pole in the flight path and appealed in panic to the control tower about it. The reply came bluntly, "You obey instructions."

The question is, will we follow and obey the commands of God's Word? Will our hearts burn with a great love for Christ and for each other as brothers and sisters in Christ! Will we love the truth of God's Word so much we will read it, study it, memorize it and tell others about it so that they can also know and enjoy it? Will this church come together around the things that really matter (like God's Word, reaching the lost. seeing people saved, building a loving! caring family of believers) and forget about those things that don't really matter (getting our way! petty disagreements, criticizing each other")?

I remember a statement once made that said, "We have no right to ask God to save and bring lots of people in our church if we won't or don't get along with each other and love each other!" The truth of this statement leads me to wonder if the people of Sullivan will see such a love and peace among the members of Sullivan Southern Baptist Church that it will be a CONTAGIOUS kind of place where people will come to get away from the trouble in their lives even if just for a while. How I pray they will and that we will be that kind of a church!

THIS JULY 4TH

As we look forward to celebrating our nation's birthday on July 4th, I sincerely hope that each of us will pause and give thanks to Almighty God for the freedom we enjoy in this country.

As Peter Marshall once prayed,

"God of our fathers, whose almighty hand has made and preserved our nation, grant that our people may understand what it is they celebrate today. May they remember how bitterly our freedom was won, the down payment that was made for it, the installments that have been made since the Republic was born, and the price that must yet be paid for our liberty. May we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to please to do what is right. May it ever be understood that our liberty is under God and can be found nowhere else. May our faith be something that is not merely stamped upon our coins, buth expressed in our lives. To the extent that America honors The, wilt Thou bless America. Keep her true as Thou has kept her free, and make her good as Thou hast made her rich.

As we celebrate, let's join together and pray for America to come to Christ.

How desperately our country needs JESUS!

Worship the RISEN SAVIOR

I SERVE A RISEN SAVIOR,

He's in the world today; I know that He is living, whatever men may say."

I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, And just the time I need Him, He’s always near.

How truly blessed it is to KNOW and SERVE a RISEN SAVIOR!

I wonder some times, how often people sing the words of this wonderful old hymn and truly realize that "He Lives"? It makes all the difference in the world if you know this living savior. He's the only One who rules and reigns over death. How blessed it is to have the full confidence of eternal LIFE by knowing this risen Savior.

Matthew 28: 5-6  But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. "He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Sadly, many don't know Him. They don't know what will happen when they die. They live in fear of that day, never at rest, never at peace. The good news is, however, that people can know this risen savior and one of the best ways to get to know Him is by coming to His house (the church) on His day (Sunday). Our people have prayed for God to move in our midst and I look forward to sharing God's Word.                   Do you know people who don't know "He Lives"? Let's not keep this joy of knowing the risen Savior, Jesus Christ to ourselves, but let's share it with everyone we can. I’ll be looking for you in church.

You are invited to come WORSHIP the RISEN SAVIOR with us..

"Well we know that we need to be in church... "

To that statement, I can honestly say, "THAT'S RIGHT!" You need to be here for God and for His glory. You need to be here for us and for our gain. Finally, you need to be here for you and for your own good. God's plan for His church makes it clear: there are no "Lone Rangers" in the Christian life. Just like players need their team, so sheep need their flock.

I Corinthians 12: 25-26  tells us that we need the care that the loving body of Christ supplies by His grace. We need a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold on to, an arm put around us, a pat on the back or a swat on the backside. Jesus gave His disciples the command to love each other as He loved them. The church is to be the physical hands of Christ to minister to each other.

Ephesians 4:11-16 shows the work of the body through the gifts of it members as essential for and directed toward the growth of the members. We serve one another so that we may; ” till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ " (Eph. 4:13). As the Bible says in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron" so if we are distant from the fellowship, our spiritual "point" will become dull.

Wolves feed on sheep that are separated from the safety of the flock, so we need the protection from the wolves of false doctrine and sinful deception that are in the world today. This protection is found in church. Listen to Hebrews 3:12-13: “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. "

A group of folks were discussing one evening where they would be if they didn't go to church the following week. They gave several different responses. One said, "I think I would go fishing." Another one said, "I think I would catch up on some chores or go visit my parents or kids." But one saint said it best when she said, "I think I would be ASHAMED of myself."

I realize that the weather has been less than pleasant lately, but I also realize that God has been moving in our midst and pouring out His blessings on us. We PRAISE and THANK Him for how He has helped and healed the lives of members for whom we have prayed. The Lord has provided opportunities for us to minister in His name to people all around us. Yes, it's true the needs are great, but God is greater! It pays to serve and worship the Lord. So, I will be looking for you in Worship and Bible Study.
